ALL Fridays of the year are Days of Abstinence from meat. (Code of Canon Law, #1251) Catholics who are 14 years old and older are required to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. (Outside of Lent the Bishops of the United States have given Catholics permission to substitute another penance in place of not eating meat.) “Parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance.” (Code of Canon Law, #1252)
